Trying to understand how AC systems actually work before I get ripped off

I'll admit I know nothing about how car AC works beyond pressing the button and hoping for cold air. That ignorance has probably cost me money over the years because I can't tell when someone's giving me a straight answer. So I've been trying to educate myself, reading about compressors, condensers, refrigerant, all the bits I've heard mentioned but never understood. I found a page that explains the common failure points and symptoms pretty clearly, and it actually helped me understand why my AC might be underperforming instead of just guessing.
