Is it smarter to repair my old Audi gearbox or sell the car?
#1
My Audi A4 is eleven years old, and last week the shifts started feeling rough, so I took it to a workshop to get it looked at. They said the gearbox needs work and gave me a rough number, but I couldn't tell if that number was fair or high. Now I am stuck thinking about the whole car. If the repair costs a big part of what the car is worth, does it even make sense to fix it? I did some reading at night and found a quick look at Audi transmission repair pricing, and it showed me that the final cost can change a lot depending on whether it is only fluid and a filter, a smaller part, or a bigger rebuild. I never knew the range could be that wide. The car has about one hundred and twenty thousand kilometers, and apart from the gearbox it has been very good to me, no engine trouble and no rust. My brother says to sell it fast before it gets worse. My friend says fix it and drive it for five more years. I honestly don't know who to listen to. Has anyone here been in the same spot? Did you repair or sell, and are you happy with that choice now? Also, how do you decide when a repair is worth it? And if I sell it with a gearbox problem, will buyers just offer almost nothing? I would like to hear real numbers and real stories if you don't mind sharing.
