Ran out of petrol on the highway with the fuel light broken, what would you do? - darianlane - 10-20-2026

This is slightly embarrassing, but I would rather ask than keep it to myself. On Saturday night I was driving my 2014 Ford Explorer back from a friend's place, and the car started to jerk and then died on a quiet stretch of road. I looked at the dashboard and realized the fuel gauge had been stuck on a quarter tank for weeks. I had been ignoring it, thinking it was just a lazy needle, and I trusted my own guess about how much was left. Clearly my guess was wrong. My phone battery was low, it was after midnight, and the nearest station was too far to walk in the dark. My brother told me I should always keep a small can in the boot for this exact reason. My friend laughed and said carrying petrol in a car is dangerous in this heat, so a can is a bad idea. I didn't know who to believe, and I was too tired to argue. Luckily a passing driver let me use his phone, and I waited about forty minutes before help arrived. I read a page from a workshop in Sharjah about roadside assistance, and it explained that a service should confirm the fuel type before coming, because putting the wrong fuel in is a much bigger problem than running out. That was a good point, because my car takes premium and I would never have thought to say it. Since this could happen again, I typed Fast emergency fuel delivery in Sharjah into my phone the next morning, mostly to see how fast these services actually arrive and what they charge. So here is what I want to ask. Do you save a number in your phone before you need it, and how long did your delivery take to arrive? Is the price usually fixed, or does it change at night and on highways? Also, how much fuel do they bring, and is it enough to reach a station safely? One more thing, could the broken fuel gauge be a sensor problem, and is it a quick fix? If you ever ran dry on the road, please tell me how you handled it and what you paid. Thanks everyone.
